Basketball Game Preview: Baker Hornets vs. Mary G. Montgomery Vikings

Baker is 9-1 against Mary G. Montgomery since December of 2020 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Baker Hornets will square off against the Mary G. Montgomery Vikings at 7:30 p.m. Baker knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past three matchups -- so hopefully Mary G. Montgomery likes a good challenge.

Baker is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They simply couldn't be stopped on Tuesday as they easily beat Bryant 100-34. Given the Hornets' advantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 34th, while the Hurricanes are ranked 315th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Baker to victory, but perhaps none more so than Bralyn Taylor, who went 8 of 17 on his way to 21 points along with eight steals and seven assists. The dominant performance gave Taylor a new career-high in steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jonathan Cox, who went 8 for 11 en route to 16 points in addition to seven rebounds and four steals.

Taylor wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Baker was working as a unit and finished the game with 23 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Mary G. Montgomery suffered their closest loss since November 7, 2024 on Tuesday. They fell just short of Davidson by a score of 57-54.

Baker has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-6 record this season. As for Mary G. Montgomery, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 8-8.

Baker didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Mary G. Montgomery when the teams last played back in February of 2024, but they still walked away with a 66-62 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Baker since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
