Softball Recap: Rio Grande Wins Going Away Against Highland

Rio Grande won the last time they faced Highland and things went their way on Saturday too. The Ravens put the hurt on the Hornets with a sharp 22-4 win. Considering the Ravens have won five matchups by more than seven runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Rio Grande let Yvette 'Bear' Breneiser and Brazil Dominguez run wild. Breneiser went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and two stolen bases, while Dominguez went a perfect 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. Those four RBI gave Dominguez a new career-high. Mercedes Valenzuela was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 1-for-2.

Rio Grande hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least five batters in 12 consecutive games.

Rio Grande's victory bumped their record up to 6-9. As for Highland, their defeat was their 11th straight at home, which dropped their record down to 2-16.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Rio Grande will venture away from home to square off against Manzano at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Ravens are facing the Monarchs at the right time seeing as the Monarchs are stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Highland, they will head out on the road to take on Valley at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
