Preview: Corinth Holders Pirates vs. Clayton Comets
Corinth Holders is 0-10 against Clayton since November of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Corinth Holders Pirates' road trip will continue as they head out to face the Clayton Comets at 7:30 p.m. on January 19th. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the pair posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Last Friday, Corinth Holders came up short against Willow Spring and fell 68-57.
Loss or not, Corinth Holders got some senior leadership from Evan Smith who scored 17 points along with seven rebounds and Max Carlson who scored 12 points along with four steals and three blocks. Tyler Sandaire was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with three steals.
Meanwhile, after a string of six wins, Clayton's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They took a 72-68 hit to the loss column at the hands of United Faith Christian Academy.
Despite the defeat, Clayton had strong showings from Justice Mitchell, who shot 4-for-7 from downtown and dropped a double-double on 26 points and 11 rebounds, and Andrew Grimes, who dropped a double-double on 23 points and ten rebounds. Grimes has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last five times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Anthony Walters, who scored six points along with two steals.
Corinth Holders bumped their record down to 1-13 with that loss, which was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season. That rough patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 62.0 points per game. As for Clayton, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-4.
Keep an eye on the arc in Friday's contest: Corinth Holders have made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having only averaged 5.2 threes per game. It's a different story for Clayton, though, as they've been averaging only 6.7 threes per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Corinth Holders was taken down by Clayton 70-43 when the teams last played back in January of 2023. Can Corinth Holders avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
