Basketball Game Preview: Concordia Mustangs vs. Yutan Chieftains

Concordia hasn't had much luck against Yutan recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Concordia Mustangs will be playing in front of their home fans against the Yutan Chieftains at 6:00 p.m. Given that both suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.

Last Friday, Concordia opened the new year with a less-than-successful 56-44 defeat to Arlington. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 126th, while the Eagles are ranked 23rd).

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Charis Hughes, who went 5 for 8 on her way to 14 points and six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Emersyn Spurgeon, who posted seven points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Concordia smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 16 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 69 points the game before, Yutan was a bit more limited in their contest on Friday. They took a 42-25 bruising from Raymond Central. The match marked the Chieftains' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Yutan's loss dropped their record down to 4-3. As for Concordia, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-4.

Concordia took a serious blow against Yutan when the teams last played back in January of 2024, falling 65-23. That contest was all but decided by halftime, at which point Concordia was down 43-8.
