Basketball Recap: Newton Takes a Loss

Newton was the 63-49 winner over Marshall when they last played one another back in February of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Newton Eagles took a 55-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Marshall Lions.

Marshall's win on Wednesday was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Payton McGuire, who posted 12 points in addition to seven assists and seven boards. Garrett Pugh was another key player, going 5 of 7 on his way to 12 points.

Newton has traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-14 record this season. As for Marshall, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 12-8 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newton will square off against Teutopolis at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. As for Marshall, they will face off against West Vigo at 7:30 p.m. on February 5th.
