Football Game Preview: Vernon Lions vs. Peaster Greyhounds

The Vernon Lions will take on the Peaster Greyhounds at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Vernon is coming into the game hot, having won their last four games.

Vernon will bounce into Friday's matchup after beating Iowa Park, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Lions enjoyed a cozy 28-14 victory over the Hawks on Friday. Given the Lions' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 246th, while the Hawks are ranked 614th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Vernon's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Ryan Fieldhouse, who rushed for 82 yards and one TD. Those 82 rushing yards gave Fieldhouse a new career-high.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Vernon was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 220 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 177 rushing yards in seven consecutive contests.

Vernon didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Kylan Jagiere and Kayson Sanders.

Meanwhile, everything came up roses for Peaster against Boyd on Friday as the squad secured a 36-7 win. The Greyhounds might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven games by 21 points or more this season.

Peaster found their leader in sophomore Hudson Salyers, who rushed for 90 yards and one touchdown. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 60 yards.

Vernon's record now sits at 8-1. As for Peaster, their record is now an identical 8-1.

Vernon lost to Peaster on the road by a decisive 29-12 margin in their previous matchup back in November of 2024. Can the Lions avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
