Basketball Recap: Maya Comes Up Short

Maya was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their 13th straight loss. They were outmatched by the Empower College Prep Wolf and fell 74-41. While losing is never fun, the Jaguars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 251st, while the Wolf are ranked 61st).

It was another big night for Oscar Gastelum, who made all 10 shots he took racking up 20 points along with six rebounds and five assists for Empower College Prep. Gastelum is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last five games he's played. Mawien Kual was another key player, dropping a double-double on 16 points and 14 boards.

Maya's defeat dropped their record down to 1-16. As for Empower College Prep, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 9-6 record this season.

Maya has already played their next contest, a 49-31 loss against Glenview College Prep on the 4th. As for Empower College Prep, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 67-32 win against Pan-American on the 4th.
