Recap: Pomperaug Panthers vs. Masuk Panthers
If The Pomperaug Panthers were riding high off their 38-7 takedown of the Weston Trojans last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Pomperaug's tough 43-22 defeat to Masuk on Friday might stick with them for a while. Pomperaug has struggled against Masuk recently, as their game on Friday was their ninth consecutive lost matchup.
Pomperaug's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performance. Perhaps the best among them was Johnny Gogas, who rushed for 63 yards and two touchdowns.
Even if they lost, Pomperaug's defensive line still kept up the pressure with four sacks. Leading the way was Chris Elovecky and his two sacks.
Jason Champagne continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Masuk, rushing for 213 yards and four touchdowns on only 14 carries. Champagne was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 69 yards. Shane Walker did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 92 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Pomperaug's loss dropped their record down to 4-2. As for Masuk, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 5-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Pomperaug will face off against Stratford at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Stratford is out to stop a four-game streak of losses at home. As for Masuk, they will head out on the road to face off against Notre Dame Catholic at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
