Basketball Recap: Newton-Conover Comes Up Short

Newton-Conover suffered their biggest defeat since December 20, 2024 on Tuesday. They came up short against the Maiden Blue Devils, falling 79-53. While losing is never fun, the Red Devils can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 282nd, while the Blue Devils are ranked 65th).

When it comes to explaining why Newton-Conover lost, don't look at Braxton Eckard. Despite the final result, he posted 20 points and eight boards. David Robison also deserves some recognition as he grabbed his first steal of the season.

Maiden's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Landen Lyerly, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds. Lyerly is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last 11 games he's played. Another player making a difference was Raheim Misher, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Newton-Conover's loss dropped their record down to 9-6. As for Maiden, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 14-2.

Newton-Conover has already played their next contest, a 67-59 victory against West Caldwell on the 24th. As for Maiden, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 95-82 win against East Burke on the 24th.
