Football Recap: Arroyo Grande Skates Past Righetti with Ease

The third road match was the charm for Arroyo Grande, as they earned their first away win of the season. They breezed past the Righetti Warriors to the tune of 64-35 on Friday. The Eagles have beaten the Warriors the last five times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Warriors has come to flipping the script.

Zack Tayman was his usual excellent self, rushing for 231 yards and five TDs while picking up 12.2 yards per carry. Those five rushing touchdowns gave him a new career-high. Levi Childers got in on the action as well, returning a kick for a touchdown.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Arroyo Grande was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 320 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 154 rushing yards in 11 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Special teams also played a big role in the game for Arroyo Grande, adding 16 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Childers, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.

When it comes to explaining why Righetti lost, don't look at Nicholas Matautia. Despite the final result, he rushed for 88 yards and three touchdowns on only nine carries, and also threw for 198 yards and one TD. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 54 yards. Justin Oliveras also deserves some recognition as he punched in his first rushing touchdown of the season.

The victory was their first on the road , bumping their record up to 2-3. As for Righetti, their loss dropped their record down to 1-4.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Arroyo Grande will venture away from home to take on Nipomo at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. That contest will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Tayman and Nick Evans. As for Righetti, they will face off against Garces Memorial at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Warriors' defense better be ready for this one: the Rams have averaged an impressive 31.8 points per game this season.
