Basketball Recap: Ian Rizo's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Johnson over Churchill

Johnson entered their matchup against Churchill on Saturday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. The Johnson Jaguars took a 62-47 bruising from the Churchill Chargers. The Jaguars were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Chargers earlier this season, when they won 55-36.

Johnson's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ian Rizo, who posted 11 points and four steals. That's the most steals Rizo has posted since back in November of 2024. Another player making a difference was Daryl Banks, who put up six points and ten boards.

Johnson's defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 12-1 and their overall record down to 25-9. As for Churchill, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 20-13.

Coming up, a feisty cat fight will be fought when the Jaguars take on the Cougars at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Johnson is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.9 points per game this season. As for Churchill, they will host LEE at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Churchill is facing LEE at the right time seeing as LEE is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
