Basketball Recap: St. Petersburg Takes a Loss

St. Petersburg has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They fell 56-43 to the Countryside Cougars on Thursday. The Green Devils were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Cougars earlier this season, when they won 58-45.

When it comes to explaining why St. Petersburg lost, don't look at Shaw Summer. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 28 points and 15 boards. Summer is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in the last 16 games she's played.

Countryside was led to victory by Julia Smith and Alyssa Wright. Smith went 8 for 19 to rack up 22 points in addition to eight rebounds and three steals, while Wright went 5 of 11 on her way to 20 points along with eight assists and five boards. Wright continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Amaria Wright was another key player, putting up four points.

St. Petersburg's defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 17-8. As for Countryside, their victory was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-5.

St. Petersburg didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 56-42 loss against Countryside on the 6th. As for Countryside, they have also already played their next match, a 74-12 win against Pinellas Park on the 4th.
