Softball Recap: Marion County Takes a Loss

Marion County had lost four straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped down to 4-14 to make it five. They came up short against the Elizabethtown Panthers, falling 11-2. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Knights of the 3-1 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in March of 2023.

Kendall Thompson made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double.

As for Elizabethtown, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 11-12 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games.

On Elizabethtown's side, Taytum Spiers made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 20 over seven innings pitched. Those 20 strikeouts gave Spiers a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, firing off two home runs, five RBI, and one double while going 3-for-5.

In other batting news, Demi Cleaver and Eliza Dober did most of the damage at the plate: Cleaver went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while Dober went 1-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. That's the most runs Dober has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Aislynn Burnett, who went 2-for-5 with two runs and one double.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Marion County will host Campbellsville at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Elizabethtown, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Boyle County at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
