Reynoldsburg girls basketball has reloaded in Ohio

Wadsworth wrestlers win Hoover tourney; Tyna scores 27 points.

After losing its top three scorers from the team that advanced to a Division I state semifinal, the Reynoldsburg  girls basketball team won 52-39 last Friday at six-time defending OCC-Ohio Division champion North (Pickerington).

The Raiders outscored the Panthers 20-2 during the final period, when Alyssa Rice scored all 10 of her points. Aliyah Zantt led Reynoldsburg with 19 points.

BLUE DEVILS WIN IN OVERTIME
The Springfield (Holland) boys basketball team made 11 of 12 free throws in overtime to edge Anthony Wayne (Whitehouse) 65-59 last Saturday. LeRoy Alexander finished with 20 points and Chester McFadden added 16 to lead the Blue Devils.

WADSWORTH WRESTLERS BOUNCE BACK
A week after finishing 14th at the Walsh Ironman, the defending Division I state champion Wadsworth wrestling team scored 251 points to win the 39-team North Canton Hoover Holiday Wrestling Invitational last Friday and last Saturday.



Kagan Squire (125 pounds), Alfredo Gray (130) and Nick Tavanello (215) all won titles, Hussain Abdulhabib (171) was second and Clay Wenger (145) finished third.

TOP PERFORMERS
* Ashley Tyna, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy girls basketball: During an 82-35 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas (Louisville) on Monday night, the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (Cuyahoga Falls) freshman guard scored 16 consecutive points in the first quarter. She finished with 27 points and six steals.

* Lauren Abendroth, Toledo Ottawa Hills girls basketball: The senior scored 22 points and passed 1,000 for her prep career as the Ottawa Hills (Toledo) girls basketball team beat Cardinal Stritch (Oregon) 58-16 on Friday.

* Percy Dean, Mifflin boys basketball: The Mifflin (Columbus) guard scored 42 points to lead his team to a 94-46 victory over Linden-McKinley (Columbus) on the opening night of City League-North Division play Dec. 14.

COMING THIS WEEK
* Pickerington North at Gahanna, boys basketball:
After advancing to the Division I state tournament for the first time last season, the Lincoln (Gahanna) boys basketball team should be tested for the first time this winter when it plays host to Pickerington North on Wednesday. Both teams are off to 5-0 starts. The Lions feature Ohio University-signee Stevie Taylor at guard, while Trent Waybright, Jake McCullough and Michael Klamo lead the Panthers.

* University School at St. Ignatius, ice hockey: Last season, St. Ignatius (Cleveland) beat 2009 state champion University School (Hunting Valley) 5-1 in a state semifinal on the way to winning its second state title.
The teams will meet at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday at Brooklyn Recreation Center.

* Perrysburg at Findlay, girls basketball: In a rematch of a Division I district semifinal won by Perrysburg 51-47 last season, the teams will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Findlay. Perrysburg, which was a regional runner-up and went 18-7 last season, has an experienced returning cast that includes junior Kelsea Newman and senior Lindsay Matolyak.



RECRUITING NEWS
Jackson (Massillon) senior Danny Baraldi has verbally committed to play men's soccer for Bowling Green, according to the Canton Repository. A four-year letterwinner who recently earned All-America status from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Baraldi broke the school's single-season goal record with 24 this season.

BRIEFLY
Last Saturday at the Canton City Schools Christmas Invitational swimming meet, Katie Miller of Firestone (Akron) was named the female swimmer of the meet after twice breaking the meet record in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. … St. Peter Chanel (Bedford) scored 282.5 points to win the 13-team Pickerington North Panther Invitational last Saturday. Teays Valley (Ashville) was second (187.5) and Lincoln (Gahanna) took third (156). Chanel had eight individuals win championships. … Olmsted Falls scored 294.5 points to win the Rebel Invitational at South (Willoughby) last Saturday.
