Softball Recap: Mountain View Snaps Three-Game Streak of Losses at Home

Mountain View lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Gunn, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Thursday's contest. The Spartans' pitcher stepped up to hand the Titans a 7-0 shutout on Thursday. This was payback for the Spartans, who suffered a 9-7 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Allison Marcelino was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 15 over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Marcelino wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Nyaira Payne, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2. The dominant performance also gave Payne a new career-high in RBI (two). Another was Courtenay Nappo, who scored a run while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.

Mountain View hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Gunn struck out 15 times.

Mountain View's win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-7. As for Gunn, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-7 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mountain View will head out to challenge Capuchino at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Mustangs will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something the Spartans surely won't give up without a fight. As for Gunn, they will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Mills at 4:00 p.m. on the 15th.
