Baseball Recap: Carrollwood Day Takes Down Berkeley Prep in a Playoff Battle

It's playoff time, and Carrollwood Day had no trouble coming through when it counted. They had just enough and edged out the Berkeley Prep Buccaneers 5-4 on Tuesday. This was a revenge game for the Patriots: when they faced off against the Buccaneers back in March, they had to take a 2-1 defeat.

Carrollwood Day got a great performance from Nick Riedel as he struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits. Riedel has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Steven Vargo, who scored three runs and stole four bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. He continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Julian Earle was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

The victory (which was Carrollwood Day's third in a row) raised their record to 15-7. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Berkeley Prep, with the loss, they broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 19-8.

Looking ahead, Carrollwood Day will square off against Tampa Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Patriots' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Crusaders have averaged an impressive 6.3 runs per game this season. Berkeley Prep does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
