Basketball Game Preview: Cathedral Catholic Dons vs. San Marcos Knights

Two dominant guards in Patrick O'Brien and Jalen Williams are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Cathedral Catholic Dons will head out to challenge the San Marcos Knights at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Cathedral Catholic comes in on three and San Marcos on ten.

Cathedral Catholic got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Steven Evans-Glynn out in front who went 8-for-10 en route to 20 points and four steals. The dominant performance also gave Evans-Glynn a new career-high in shooting accuracy (80%). PJ Jourdain was another key player, going 6-for-7 on his way to 19 points in addition to seven assists and five boards.

Meanwhile, San Marcos earned a 62-55 win over Mission Hills last Thursday. Given the Knights' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 33rd, while the Grizzlies are ranked 162nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Cathedral Catholic better keep an eye on Williams. He was instrumental in San Marcos' win, going 5-for-12 to rack up 16 points and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Richie Ramirez, who went 6-for-12 en route to 13 points and six rebounds.

San Marcos' victory was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 25-3. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 76.2 points over those games. As for Cathedral Catholic, their record now sits at 19-9.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Cathedral Catholic has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 24.1 boards per game. However, it's not like San Marcos struggles in that department as they've been averaging 30.4 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.

Cathedral Catholic came up short against San Marcos in their previous matchup back in December of 2024, falling 71-64. Can Cathedral Catholic avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
