League recap: Maiden tops Newton-Conover to extend winning streak

2A Conference 3 recap October 8, 2013

Maiden extended the longest winning streak in 2A Conference 3 this week by beating Newton-Conover, 23-6. This was the team's sixth consecutive win.

Lincolnton fell to East Lincoln 28-9 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Maiden's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Jake McRee threw for 261 and 1 touchdown and Justus Woods had 84 yards receiving. On the ground T.J. Vick chipped in 94 yards. Vick helped Maiden's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 69 yards.

McRee put up the best numbers in passing as Frank Snider's team topped the Red Devils. McRee's favorite target this week was Woods, who caught 5 passes for 84 yards.

The Blue Devils' McRee and Alex White led the league in both passing and receiving yards. 5-11 quarterback McRee has thrown for 1,493 yards this season, while White has 21 catches for 447 yards. Chaz Surratt from the Mustangs leads the league in rushing with 531 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when East Lincoln takes on Bunker Hill. Mike Byus' team is in third place, while the Bears are in fourth place.

Bandys and West Caldwell played the closest game in 2A Conference 3 this week, with Bandys eventually emerging with a 28-25 victory. Logan Beegle threw for 59 yards and 1 touchdown and ran for 71 yards in the win.
