Sean Kelleher made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Those eight strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ashton Ray, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Lower Cape May is 3-1 when Ray posts two or more runs, but 6-14 otherwise. Drew Kronemeyer was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and three runs.
Meanwhile, Atlantic Christian entered their tilt with The Pilgrim Academy on Tuesday with five consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with six. They were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Pioneers. Considering the Cougars have won seven contests by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Lower Cape May, Atlantic Christian also got a great game from a two-way player: Carter Knuth. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Knuth has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Adam Schlundt and Luke Odell did most of the damage at the plate: Schlundt went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases and four runs, while Odell got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four stolen bases and three runs. Another player making a difference was Ethan Costello, who earned one run and two stolen bases.
Atlantic Christian's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-4. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Lower Cape May, their record now sits at 9-15.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Lower Cape May has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Atlantic Christian struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
