Basketball Recap: Samantha Shively's Big Game Can't Quite Lead St. John's Catholic Prep over Mount De Sales Academy

If St. John's Catholic Prep was feeling good fresh off their 58-37 takedown of St. Paul's Girls on Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The St. John's Catholic Prep Vikings took a 51-42 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mount de Sales Academy Sailors on Saturday. The Vikings were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Sailors apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2023.

Several Vikings players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Samantha Shively, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and ten rebounds. Shively is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last 13 games she's played. Olivia Bolduc was another key player, putting up 14 points and three steals.

Mount de Sales Academy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Shelby Lewis led the charge by dropping a double-double on 19 points and 13 rebounds. With that strong performance, Lewis is now averaging an impressive 15.1 points per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Katie Carroll, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 12 boards.

St. John's Catholic Prep's loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 5-13. As for Mount de Sales Academy, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. John's Catholic Prep will take on Severn School at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Mount de Sales Academy, they will face off against Notre Dame Prep at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Mount de Sales Academy will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.
