High school basketball: No. 18 Bishop McNamara erases 19-point, second-half deficit to upset No. 1 Sierra Canyon 57-52

Three-star Indiana signee Prince-Alexander Moody goes on personal 10-0 run in fourth quarter to secure victory.

No. 18 Bishop McNamara (Forestville, Md.) stunned top-ranked Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) 57-52 on Saturday night, erasing a 19-point third-quarter deficit.

The Mustangs were fueled by strong second-half performances from Indiana signee Prince-Alexander Moody and top 20 senior Qayden Samuels.

Moody provided the fourth-quarter spark with a personal 10-0 run that spanned over four minutes to give Bishop McNamara a 55-48 lead with approximately two minutes remaining before cruising to the win.

Bishop McNamara fell behind 34-15 early in the third quarter, but responded with a 23-3 spurt powered by 11 points from Samuels.

The Mustangs outscored Sierra Canyon 27-17 out of intermission, but a Jordan Askew half court buzzer-beater gave the Trailblazers a 44-42 lead heading into the final quarter.



Sierra Canyon jumped ahead 14-5 at the end of the first before extending their lead to 27-15 at the half. The California powerhouse came out strong at the start of each half.

A tale of two halves saw Bishop McNamara shoot 5 of 28 from the field and 2 of 17 from 3-point range in the first half before heating after the break. The Mustangs knocked down 16 of 22 shots from the field, including 7 of 11 shots from range in the second half.

They also held Sierra Canyon to 23 points in the second half. The No. 1-ranked team in the MaxPreps Top 25 was 19 of 55 from the field and 9 of 34 from 3-point range in the loss.

Top 25 North Carolina commit Maximo Adams had a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds for Sierra Canyon.

Samuels scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half while shooting 7 of 13 from the field and 3 of 7 from deep. Moody contributed team-highs of 19 points and eight rebounds in the big-time win.

Bishop McNamara (3-0), which was coming off a 71-67 win against No. 23 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), faces Annapolis Area Christian (Severn, Md.) on Tuesday after going 2-0 against a pair of nationally-ranked Golden State opponents.



Sierra Canyon (5-1) looks to bounce back from its first setback on Wednesday when the Trailblazers hosts Rancho Christian (Temecula, Calif.).
