Basketball Game Preview: Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks vs. Discovery Canyon Thunder

Cheyenne Mountain is 2-8 against Discovery Canyon since January of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks will be playing at home against the Discovery Canyon Thunder at 6:30 p.m. One thing working in Cheyenne Mountain's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last five games.

Last Friday, Cheyenne Mountain beat Air Academy 59-46. Given the Red-Tailed Hawks' advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 52nd, while the Kadets are ranked 224th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Cheyenne Mountain to victory, but perhaps none more so than Cayden Cooper, who posted 16 points along with seven rebounds and seven steals. Cooper's evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Treglia, who earned ten points in addition to five boards and five steals.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Discovery Canyon, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. Everything went their way against Sand Creek on Monday as Discovery Canyon made off with a 74-53 win. The Thunder have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won six matches by 21 points or more this season.

Discovery Canyon's victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-2. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.0 points per game. As for Cheyenne Mountain, their win bumped their record up to 12-3.

Cheyenne Mountain came up short against Discovery Canyon when the teams last played back in February of 2024, falling 61-49. Can Cheyenne Mountain avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
