Baseball Recap: Stevens Wins High-Profile Match Against Spearfish

Stevens faced Spearfish in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Raiders blew past the Spartans 8-2. The Raiders might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven matchups by six runs or more this season.

Ian Beer made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits (and not a single walk). He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Mason Brooks, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Stevens' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 1-3 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Morgan DelaPena, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

The victory made it two in a row for Stevens and bumps their season record up to 8-3. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Spearfish, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-3 record this season.

Stevens will look to defend their home field on Sunday against Tea at 10:00 a.m. As for Spearfish, they will head out to take on Varsity Opponent at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
