Basketball Recap: Alayaha Hopkins' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Grapeland over Leon

After flying high against Centerville last Friday, Grapeland came back down to earth. The matchup between the Grapeland Sandies and the Leon Cougars didn't end well, with the Grapeland Sandies falling 57-43. The Sandies haven't had much luck with the Cougars recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.

Grapeland's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Alayaha Hopkins, who went 5 of 12 en route to 14 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Mikayla Woods, who posted ten points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Grapeland smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in three consecutive games.

Grapeland's loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 4-1 and their overall record down to 8-8. As for Leon, they are on a roll lately: they've won 15 of their last 17 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 18-5 record this season.

Grapeland will look to defend their home court on Friday against Lovelady at 4:30 p.m. Lovelady will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something Grapeland surely won't give up without a fight. As for Leon, a feisty cat fight will be fought when the Leon Cougars take on the Centerville Tigers at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Leon will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.
