Preview: Seguin Matadors vs. Pieper Warriors

Two dominant guards in John Jackson and MAYSON THOMAS are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Seguin Matadors will be playing at home against the Pieper Warriors at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Seguin focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 on Tuesday.

Last Tuesday, Seguin ended up a good deal behind Boerne-Champion and lost 66-51. While losing is never fun, Seguin can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 392nd, while Boerne-Champion is ranked 60th).

Seguin's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Corey Dailey, who scored 18 points along with five rebounds, and Jackson who scored 17 points along with seven rebounds. Jackson hasn't dropped below 17 points for 13 straight games.

Meanwhile, even though Smithson Valley scored an imposing 57 points on Tuesday, Pieper still came out on top. Pieper pulled ahead with a 58-57 photo finish over Smithson Valley. The win made it back-to-back wins for Pieper.

Pieper's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but THOMAS led the charge by dropping a double-double on 21 points and 15 rebounds. THOMAS hasn't dropped below nine rebounds for four straight games. Another player making a difference was SANTIAGO LOYA, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds and five steals.

Seguin has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 14-16 record this season. As for Pieper, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 20-11 record this season.

Friday's matchup is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Seguin have been dynamite from deep this season, having made 46% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Pieper struggles in that department as they've made 45.5% of their threes this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Seguin came up short against Pieper in their previous matchup back in January, falling 75-65. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of THOMAS, who dropped a double-double on 31 points and 11 rebounds. Now that Seguin knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
