Baseball Recap: Smithsburg's Undefeated Season over After Three Games

Smithsburg suffered their closest loss since April 24, 2024 on Wednesday. They fell just short of the Urbana Hawks by a score of 14-12. The loss put an end to the Leopards' undefeated start to the season.

Gavin Ramarge and George Mantz stepped up to the plate in a big way. Ramarge scored three runs and stole a base while going 1-for-4, while Mantz scored two runs while going 2-for-4. Demari Whittaker was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases.

They weren't the only ones working in the hit department: Smithsburg kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits every time they've taken the field this season.

Having lost for the first time this season, Smithsburg fell to 2-1. Urbana has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Smithsburg is set to face off against their familiar foe Catoctin at 4:45 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Urbana will challenge rival Tuscarora at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The matchup will give Urbana their first taste of in-conference action this season.
