NorCal news and notes...

* De La Salle rallied to beat Mullen Prep of Denver, which led 13-7 at the half before falling 30-13. In the second half, the Spartans' fast defense allowed just two first downs against a program that has won 14 Colorado state titles. Tiapepe Vitale rushed for 129 yards and a score for De La Salle, unbeaten against state competition since 2008 and against NorCal foes since 1991.

* Vacaville forced a late fumble and then drove 48 yards to beat Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 28-24 on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Nic Ardave to David Mewborn with five seconds to play. Ardave had two touchdown passes. Marin Catholic is the last team to beat Vacaville, which went 13-1 last season and won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship, with that Marin loss costing the Bulldogs a state-bowl bid.. Vacaville plays at Granite Bay on Friday.

* With Cal coach Jeff Tedford in attendance, Bears-bound Marin Catholic quarterback Jared Goff passed for 250 yards and three touchdowns.



* Logan, coming off a 10-1 season and a spirited toe-to-toe preseason scrimmage against De La Salle, is off to a 3-0 start after blasting previously ranked San Ramon Valley 35-0. Karsten Wethington and Warren Long each returned interceptions for scores.

* Palma needed every ounce of defense to hold off St. Francis 12-7. The Chieftains had four interceptions, and Marcus Washington rushed for two scores against the Lancers, who scored late.

* Franklin trailed Freedom 21-0 early last year and suffered a 28-21 loss, and on Friday, Freedom bolted to a 21-0 lead again. This time, Franklin won 31-21, recovering two onside kicks and using a 56-yard touchdown sprint by Steven Rogers to pull away.

* Pleasant Grove rode momentum and went for two to beat previous No. 3 Nevada Union 29-28, taking its only lead with 33 seconds left on a Dre Terrell touchdown pass to Wyatt Demps — his fourth to the junior receiver recruit — and then finding fullback Tyree Hanson for a two-point conversion. Still, it took Demps' block of a 44-yard field goal with 10 seconds to go to seal it.

* Burbank has played football in Sacramento for 44 seasons, but it never drew a crowd of 5,000 like Friday when the new Titans stadium was packed for a rivalry meeting with Grant. Burbank won 36-27 as Isiah Williams rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Ernest Jenkins raced for two scores, including a 75-yarder. Next for Burbank, which runs the triple-option offense, is a game at Del Oro. Grant fell out of The Sacramento Bee's Top 10 for the first time since the first week of the 1991 season.

* Elk Grove rallied late to beat Del Campo 19-16, thanks to a 58-yard touchdown bomb to Bwon Canada in the first half and a 48-yard pass play to the 4-yard line to set up the game-winning touchdown run by Robert Frazier with just over a minute to play.



* Los Banos senior Joseph Vera underwent surgery late Friday night after a game at Manteca. He passed out just before the half, apparently the result from an early hit. Surgery was performed to relieve pressure on Vera's brain, and he was awake and alert and recalled details of the game the next morning, a relief to those in a football-passionate family and community. Los Banos beat Manteca 42-24 with teammates not knowing what happened to Vega, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound defensive lineman.
