Basketball Recap: Marcos de Niza Takes a Loss

Marcos de Niza was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 11th straight loss. They were dealt a 46-15 defeat at the hands of the St. Mary's Knights. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Padres this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 59-24 on January 7th.

Kiana Greer was Marcos de Niza's leading scorer, having posted seven points. Elyanna Carbajal held things down on the boards with seven rebounds. Abigail Cooper took the lead distributing the ball, coming up with two assists.

Gwen Carter continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for St. Mary's, going 7 of 11 on her way to 17 points. Carter has been hot recently, having posted 16 or more points the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Sophia Bryant, who posted three points in addition to five boards and four steals.

Marcos de Niza's loss dropped their record down to 4-17. As for St. Mary's, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 6-9 record this season.

Marcos de Niza and St. Mary's could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings. Marcos de Niza will take on Mesquite at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday down 262 places (265 vs. 3). Meanwhile, St. Mary's (ranked 153rd) will meet Sunnyslope (ranked 16th) at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
