Missouri: Hillcrest's Green is boys MVP

Dorial Green found a way to lead Springfield-Hillcrest to the Missouri Class 5 high school basketball title with strong play on both ends of the floor.

With the Missouri Class 5 boys basketball championship on the line last month, Springfield-Hillcrest sophomore Dorial Green blocked a pair of Oakville shots on back-to-back possessions late in the game, and scored 15 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter.

His late-game heroics in the championship game allowed the Hornets to crawl out of a four-point deficit with two minutes remaining, and into the championship winner’s circle for the first time since 1984.

Included in Green’s 15 fourth-quarter points was an 8-0 run that he himself produced, spearheading the decision to tab the 6-foot-5 forward as the Most Valuable Player on this season’s Missouri Boys Super Six basketball team.

Green was a steady performer throughout the regular season as well – pouring in 18.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game for Hornet coach John Schaefer.

The dual-sport athlete broke the Missouri single-season record for receiving yards in football last fall and was the top vote-getter on the All-Ozark Conference football and basketball teams.

Joining Green on the Super Six are Columbia-Rock Bridge’s Ricky Kreklow, Chaminade’s Bradley Beal, St. Francis Borgia’s Nathan Scheer, Scott County Central’s Otto Porter and Wellston-Eskridge’s Ben McLemore.

Kreklow, a 6-6 guard, averaged 16.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists while leading the Bruins to a 20-6 record in 2009-10. The Missouri basketball recruit connected on 73 of 201 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.

Beal led the Flyers to the Class 5, District 3 tournament final before falling to Christian Brothers 56-46. The 6-4 junior lead the defending Class 5 champions by averaging 29 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.48 assists during the 21-6 season. After wading through the many Division I offers he received, Beal has opted to play college ball at Florida.

St. Francis Borgia appeared to be on its way to back-to-back Class 4 championships after running through the regular season undefeated and eventually posting a 30-0 mark following an 83-72 semifinal win over Soldan. A 47-43 loss to last year’s runner-up, Kearney, ended the streak in the championship game.

Scheer was a big reason St. Francis Borgia won 46 straight games and nearly defended its 2008-09 title. The 6-5 senior averaged 21.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.23 steals, while shooting 57.6 percent from the field.

Scott County Central did defend its Class 1 title with a 96-47 win over Pilot Grove. In the title game, Porter broke his father’s state tournament single-game rebounding record of 25 with 35 of his own. The 6-8 junior forward also added 29 points in the title win. For the year, Porter averaged 28.2 points, 14.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists for the 29-2 Braves.

Ben McLemore led Wellston-Eskridge to this season’s Show-Me Showdown II in Columbia by averaging 28.1 points, 12.8 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 2.27 blocks per game. The 6-4 junior guard led the Trojans to a 19-11 record and a 77-61 Class 2 consolation win over Clever. McLemore scored 53 points collectively in the 69-68 semifinal loss to eventual runner-up Bernie and the third-place win over the Bluejays.

McCluer’s Shaquille Boga, Kearney’s Dillon Starzl, Scott County Central’s Bobby Hatchett, Cardinal Ritter’s Eric Clark, Moberly’s Brennen Hughes and Hogan Prep’s Dawon Cummings all played well enough to make the Super Six second team.
