Football Recap: Rhys Ragan's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Decatur over Liberty Christian

Decatur lost against Liberty Christian back in September of 2024, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Eagles took a 35-24 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Warriors. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 133rd, while the Warriors are ranked 49th).

Decatur lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Rhys Ragan, who threw for 251 yards and a pair of TDs. Jamari Fletcher was another key player, gaining 151 total yards and a touchdown.

Quinn Murphy had a dynamite game For Liberty Christian., throwing for 293 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.3 yards per attempt, and also rushing for 69 yards and a pair of scores. The dominant performance also gave Murphy a new career-high in rushing touchdowns (two). Liberty Christian also got a significant boost from Correll Buckhalter, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 82 yards.

Decatur's defeat dropped their record down to 0-2. As for Liberty Christian, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.

Decatur wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 50-15 victory against Graham on the 19th. As for Liberty Christian, they will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Trinity Christian at 7:00 p.m. on the 26th. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 930 yards in their previous games.
