Two dominant guards in Aubrey Griffin and Sumayah McIntosh are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Lake Highland Prep Highlanders will host the Lakewood Spartans at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.
Lake Highland Prep heads in on the heels of a playoff match on Saturday. They took a 61-52 hit to the loss column at the hands of Windermere Prep.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Myanna Hatchette, who posted 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Valeria Munoz, who went 5 for 12 on her way to 14 points.
Meanwhile, Lakewood also suffered a loss in their last game, but this one to Tampa Catholic by a score of 55-48.
Lake Highland Prep will have to contain Alahni Lovett as she made an impact in Lakewood's last game. She scored 16 points along with seven steals and five assists. Lovett's evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least 16 points. McIntosh was another key player, going 5 of 9 en route to 12 points and seven rebounds.
Even though they lost, Lakewood smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in five consecutive contests.
Lake Highland Prep's defeat dropped their record down to 13-12. As for Lakewood, their loss dropped their record down to 17-8.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Lake Highland Prep has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 26.7 boards per game. However, it's not like Lakewood struggles in that department as they've been averaging 30.5 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Everything came up roses for Lake Highland Prep against Lakewood in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, as the team secured a 66-34 victory. Will Lake Highland Prep repeat their success, or does Lakewood have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
