Basketball Recap: Dixie Heights Comes Up Short

After flying high against Bracken County on Monday, Dixie Heights came back down to earth. The Dixie Heights Colonels fell just short of the Newport Wildcats by a score of 43-40 on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Colonels have suffered since February 13, 2024.

Newport's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Yamil Rondon, who went 5 for 12 to rack up 13 points and eight assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Griffin Starks, who went 5 of 10 en route to 12 points.

Dixie Heights dropped their record down to 17-6 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road. As for Newport, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 13 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-9 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Dixie Heights will square off against Holy Cross at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Newport, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Conner at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Conner knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past 19 games -- so hopefully Newport likes a good challenge.
