Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Elk Grove walked away with it. They put the hurt on the Downey Knights with a sharp 12-2 win on Wednesday. The victory was nothing new for the Thundering Herd as they're now sitting on nine straight.

Brent Martin made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out ten over 4.1 innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Antonio Cuevas, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high. Chase Groves was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three runs and one stolen base.

Elk Grove was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .520. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Elk Grove pushed their record up to 20-9 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for Downey, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 13-16.

Coming up, Elk Grove will take on Lodi at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Thundering Herd's pitchers better be ready for this one: the Flames have averaged an impressive 6.7 runs per game this season. Downey does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
