Softball Recap: Cleveland Comes Up Short

Cleveland had lost ten straight at home dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 0-9 to make it 11. They lost 22-1 to the Evergreen Wolverines. The Eagles were not able to make up for their defeat to the Wolverines from their previous meeting back in March of 2022.

As for Evergreen, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 12-4. Considering they have won nine matchups by more than 13 runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

For Evergreen's part, Vanessa Smiley was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched 2.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Smiley was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ita Fonoti, who fired off two home runs, seven RBI, and three runs while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs she has posted since April 3rd. Another player making a difference was Jacqueline Jolime, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and three RBI.

Cleveland didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 13-12 win against Rainier Beach on the 29th. As for Evergreen, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, a 12-2 victory against Highline on the 29th.
