Baseball Recap: Smithsburg Drops Highest Score of Season Against Clear Spring

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Smithsburg had no problem doing just that on Thursday. They put the hurt on the Clear Spring Blazers with a sharp 14-3 victory. The Leopards' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Heath Githens made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Smithsburg is undefeated when he allows at most two walks, but 7-10 otherwise. Githens was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

In other batting news, Mason Oates was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April. George Mantz was another key player, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two RBI and one run.

The win (which was Smithsburg's fifth in a row) raised their record to 15-10. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Clear Spring, their loss ended an eight-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 16-4.

Coming up, Smithsburg will square off against Snow Hill at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Clear Spring does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
