Basketball Recap: West Side Takes a Loss

If West Side was riding high fresh off their 82-42 takedown of Golda Och Academy last Monday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The West Side Roughriders fell to the Newark Central Blue Devils 50-45. The Roughriders were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Blue Devils earlier this season, when they won 70-69.

Newark Central's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Deon Willis led the charge by putting up 17 points along with four steals and three blocks. Drean Aikins was another key player, dropping a double-double on 17 points and 12 rebounds.

West Side now has a losing record at 3-4. As for Newark Central, their win ended a ten-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 1-11.

The future could be bright for both West Side and Newark Central: their next opponents haven't had the best luck recently. West Side will look to extend Newark Collegiate Academy's three-game losing streak when the meet at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Similarly, Newark Central will try to hand Marion P. Thomas their third-straight defeat when the two meet at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
