Softball Recap: Keyser Golden Tornado vs. University Hawks
Keyser dropped to 23-5 on Thursday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins at home. They lost 7-1 to the University Hawks. If the Golden Tornado were looking for revenge after losing 8-0 to the Hawks when the teams met back in April of 2023, then they'll just have to keep looking.
Bibs Felton made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one home run and one stolen base.
As for University, the win (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 25-5. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.4 runs over those games.
On University's side, Maddie Campbell made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and not a single walk). Campbell has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Whitney Cox and Maddie Walls did most of the damage at the plate: Cox went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI, while Walls went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most RBI Walls has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Maddie Shaver, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.
Looking ahead, Keyser is taking a road trip to take on Morgantown at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Golden Tornado 3, the Mohigans 2.8) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for University, they will take on Washington at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Patriots have averaged an impressive 8 runs per game this season.
