High school football: Averaging 61 points per game, Cypress Park of Texas on track to become one of the highest scoring teams in history

By Kevin Askeland Oct 7, 2021, 11:10am

Texas squad looks to join list that begins with all-time leader Fostoria with 74.5 points per game in 1912.

Four years ago, Cypress Park (Cypress, Texas) was in its first year of playing varsity football, averaging 9 points per game on the way to a 0-10 season. Today, the Tigers lead the nation in scoring at 61 points per game and sit at 5-0.

Should Cypress Park continue its current trend, the Tigers will be among the highest scoring teams of all-time. MaxPreps has compiled a list of the teams that have posted the highest scoring averages each year dating back to 1912. The list begins with Fostoria (Ohio), which set the national single season scoring average record with 74.5 points per game.

Over the past 110 years, Texas teams dominate the scoring average list with 31 teams, including a Refugio program that has made the list four times. California's Central Catholic (Modesto) is the only school to lead the nation three straight seasons.

The list is a fluid one with future research likely to unearth teams that have higher scoring averages. This is particularly true for the period from 1931 to 1990 where leading teams tended to average between 40 and 50 points per game. Despite exhaustive research, we were unable to come up a leader for 1932. From 1912 to 1930 and 1990-2020, season leaders averaged between 50 and 60 (and sometimes 75) points, the leaders are better documented.

Sources for the list include state association record books, the NFHS record book, Cal-Hi Sports Record Book and Texas High School Football History.
