Softball Game Preview: Edgewood Cougars vs. Monroe Hornets

Edgewood is a perfect 3-0 against Monroe since March of 2023 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Cougars will face off against the Hornets at 5:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

Edgewood barely beat Middletown the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Cougars put the hurt on the Middies with a sharp 15-1 win on Tuesday. The Cougars' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Jaycie Broshear made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She pitched five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two triples and four RBI. Those two triples gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Evelyn Henson and Rylee Kallick did most of the damage at the plate: Henson went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Kallick went 1-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and one stolen base. Those three runs gave Henson a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Sam Verhoff, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.

Edgewood always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .529. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

While Monroe didn't have the best season last year (they finished 5-11), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They were the clear victors by an 11-4 margin over Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy on Wednesday. The result was nothing new for the Hornets, who have now won four games by six runs or more so far this season.

The victory (which was Monroe's third in a row) raised their record to 8-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.7 runs on average over those games. As for Edgewood, their record is now 4-9.

Edgewood beat Monroe 7-3 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Hornets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
