Bear Grass Charter is a perfect 7-0 against Mattamuskeet since September of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Bears are taking a road trip to face off against the Lakers at 7:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Bear Grass Charter has six straight wins, Mattamuskeet has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Bear Grass Charter is headed into the contest after thoroughly thrashing Hobgood Charter: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Bears blew the Raiders out of the water with a 47-7 final score. Considering the Bears have won four matchups by more than 31 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Bear Grass Charter got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Connor Clifton out in front who rushed for 125 yards and one TD on only seven carries. Clifton also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, picking up two sacks and making five total tackles (3.0 for loss). Coby Beck was another key passer, throwing for 121 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only nine passes.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Bear Grass Charter was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 236 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 178 rushing yards in 11 consecutive games dating back to last season.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Bear Grass Charter's defense and their five sacks. In that department, Clifton was the leader with two. Bear Grass Charter received some extra help from Blake Jones, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Meanwhile, Mattamuskeet had to suffer through a 50-6 loss at the hands of Lawrence Academy. While losing is never fun, the Lakers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 414th, while the Warriors are ranked fifth).
Mattamuskeet's loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Bear Grass Charter, their win bumped their record up to 6-0.
Everything came up roses for Bear Grass Charter against Mattamuskeet in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, as the team secured a 60-12 victory. In that contest, the Bears amassed a halftime lead of 38-6, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Friday.
