Volleyball Recap: Wayne Blue Devils vs. Battle Creek Braves
If Wayne was riding high fresh off their 3-0 takedown of O'Neill on Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Blue Devils fell just short of the Battle Creek Braves by a score of 3-2 on Wednesday. The defeat continues a trend for the Blue Devils in their meetings with the Braves: they've now lost seven in a row.
Wayne started the match hot and won the first two sets, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 15-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 15-10.
Elle Powicki paced Wayne's offense, picking up 14 kills. Powicki got some help from Mallory Redden and her 41 assists. Finally, Megan Magnuson kept Wayne's defense grounded, leading the team with four blocks.
Leading Battle Creek to victory were Ava Kuchar and Jaidyn Smutny. Kuchar had seven digs and three aces, while Smutny had 20 digs and six assists. That's the most assists Smutny has posted since back in November of 2024.
