Softball Recap: Cottondale Drops Season-High Score on Vernon

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Cottondale). They put the hurt on the Vernon Yellowjackets with a sharp 15-3 victory on Tuesday. The Hornets haven't had any issues with the Yellowjackets recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive win against them.

Annelise Skipper spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on two hits and racked up 18 Ks. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two hits in eight consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Chrishaunna Dawson and Paige Carter did most of the damage at the plate: Dawson scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-5, while Carter scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5. That's the most runs Carter has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaylee Cripes, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.

Cottondale was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .415. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Cottondale's victory bumped their record up to 6-3. As for Vernon, they dropped their record down to 1-7 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight at home.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cottondale will challenge Marianna at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Cottondale is facing Marianna at the right time seeing as Marianna is stuck on a ten-game losing streak. As for Vernon, they will take on Malone at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Malone has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 19 runs per game on average), something Vernon will no doubt try to take advantage of.
