Recap: Vela Sabercats vs. Nixon Mustangs
Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only the Vela Sabercats walked away with it. They snuck past the Mustangs with a 66-60 victory on Friday. The win was familiar territory for Vela who now have 20 in a row.
Axel Garza continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, almost dropping a double-double on 28 points and nine rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points he has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jp Olivarez, who scored ten points along with five assists and four steals.
Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Mason Vela, who scored 27 points along with two steals. Vela hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. Uli Torres was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds.
Nixon struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Vela racked up 19 assists.
Vela has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 24 of their last 25 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 34-5 record this season. As for Nixon, they have not been sharp recently as the team has lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 25-12 record this season.
Vela's road trip will continue as they head out to face Pioneer at 7:30 p.m. on February 27th. Vela knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past five games -- so hopefully Pioneer likes a good challenge. Nixon does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
