Centaurus is preparing for their first league matchup of the season on Friday. They will challenge the Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks at 6:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Centaurus took a loss when they played away from home on September 12th, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed last Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Mountain Range 38-6. The result was nothing new for the Warriors, who have now won three contests by 32 points or more so far this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Centaurus' defense and their five sacks. Ty Schreiber was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two himself.
Meanwhile, Cheyenne Mountain strolled into their game on Friday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They breezed past Doherty to the tune of 41-6. The Red-Tailed Hawks pushed the score to 41-0 by the end of the third, a deficit the Spartans cut but never quite recovered from.
Cheyenne Mountain's win came from a few key players Centaurus will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Donovan Sandoval, who rushed for 91 yards on only nine carries. Those 91 rushing yards gave him a new career-high.
Cheyenne Mountain was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 269 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 226 rushing yards in six consecutive games dating back to last season.
Cheyenne Mountain didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Mason Godshall and Caden Vinson. Godshall got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Centaurus' record is now 4-1. As for Cheyenne Mountain, their record now sits at 5-0.
We should be in store for an exciting game as the two teams have no problem gaining yardage. Centaurus has been on an offensive roll this season, having averaged 358.8 total yards per game. However, it's not like Cheyenne Mountain struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 365.6 total yards. With a pair of commanding offenses duking it out, the defenses are going to have their work cut out for them.
Centaurus couldn't quite finish off Cheyenne Mountain in their previous matchup back in October of 2024 and fell 26-23. Can the Warriors avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
