League recap: Independent climbs in state rankings with win

Independent moved up to 103 from 135 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Central Plains. A 61-58 win over Anthony-Harper-Chaparral helped the Panthers improve their standing.

Garden Plain extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Cheney, 34-12. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Owls.

Scott Beecher provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Medicine Lodge fell to Inman. He completed 11 passes for 268 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 103 yards. Beecher's favorite target this week was Russell Peitz, who caught four passes for 134 yards.

Matt Loveland threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns. He was seven-14 with zero interceptions.

Wyatt Goodin made the biggest impact on defense this week as Independent bested the Roadrunners. The 5-foot-11 senior recorded one fumble.

6-foot-1 quarterback Loveland of Jarrod Hibler's team is the league leader in passing yards this season with 704. He has also thrown nine touchdowns. On the ground, the Indians' Bryant Wornkey has rushed for 227 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Trevor Copenhaver. The Anthony-Harper-Chaparral star has eight catches for 316 yards.

The marquee game in Central Plains this week will be the clash between Garden Plain and Conway Springs. Brad McCormick's team comes into the matchup ranked 21st in the state, while the Cardinals ranks 10th.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Owls take on Conway Springs. Garden Plain has allowed 70 points this season, while Matt Biehler's team has given up 62. The Owls allowed 12 points last week as they topped the Cardinals.
