League recap: Combs breaks off league-leading run for Willamina

3A West Valley recap October 22, 2013

Jordan Combs of Willamina ran for the longest rushing play in 3A West Valley this season against Colton last week. Combs ran for 58 yards on the play and finished with 102 on the day as his team lost to the Vikings.

Willamina lost to Colton 57-28 last week, the largest margin of any game. Shane Thomas threw for 35 yards and caught 4 passes for 101 yards in the loss.

The Bulldogs' offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Nathan Johnson threw for 72 and 1 touchdown and Thomas had 101 yards receiving. On the ground Combs contributed 102 yards. Brodey Bruckner helped Willamina's passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 56 yards.

Combs provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Willamina lost to the Vikings.

Combs was the best running back in the league this week. Teammate Coty Brown added to the ground attack by rushing for 15 yards.

Willamina's offense cannot be tamed this season and the Bulldogs feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Johnson has thrown for 380 yards and 1 touchdown this season, while Thomas has 17 catches for 412 yards.

An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Colton takes on Amity. As it stands, the Vikings are in second, while the Warriors are in fourth.

Colton made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 11,929 from 12,295. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 57-28 victory over the Bulldogs last week.
