Basketball Recap: Weldon Valley Comes Up Short

Weldon Valley lost against Lone Star back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Weldon Valley Warriors lost to the Lone Star Longhorns on the road by a 52-34 margin.

Despite the loss, Weldon Valley still got an impressive performance from Annie Onufrak, who posted six points along with ten rebounds and five steals. Onufrak is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down nine or more in each of the last four games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Isabella Petrino, who earned 11 points and four steals.

Even though they lost, Weldon Valley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 16 offensive rebounds in seven consecutive games.

Leading Lone Star to victory were Jade Kuntz and Peytyn Kuntz. Jade dropped a double-double with 19 points and ten rebounds, while Peytyn went 7-for-13 to rack up 16 points and four steals. Jade also posted eight assists, which is notable because Lone Star is 7-3 when she posts at least eight assists, but 5-7 otherwise. Grace Cochran was another key player, putting up four points and eight boards.

Weldon Valley's loss dropped their record down to 10-13. As for Lone Star, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 12-10.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Weldon Valley will square off against Idalia on Friday. Idalia will roll in looking for their 11th straight victory, something Weldon Valley surely won't give up without a fight. As for Lone Star, they will challenge De Beque on Friday.
