Preview: Key West Conchs vs. Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks
The Key West Conchs will head out on the road to face off against the Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Friday, Key West got themselves on the board against Gateway, but Gateway never followed suit. They really took it to the Eagles for the full four quarters, racking up a 42-0 victory at home. The matchup was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Key West had established a 35 point advantage.
Walson Morin was a one-man wrecking crew for Key West as he rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns on only five carries. Adrian Mira and his 94 yards on the ground were also a key factor in Key West's win.
Meanwhile, Archbishop McCarthy put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Dr. Joaquin Garcia 42-0 at home. Given Archbishop McCarthy's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 223rd, while Dr. Joaquin Garcia is ranked 506th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Robert Kerns continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, throwing for 171 yards and four touchdowns while completing 81.8% of his passes, and also rushing for 82 yards and a touchdown. The team also got some help courtesy of Jeremiah Alexandre, who rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown.
Their wins bumped Key West to 3-6 and Archbishop McCarthy to 8-0.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Key West has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 332.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Archbishop McCarthy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 274 per game. It's looking like Friday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Everything came up roses for Key West against Archbishop McCarthy in their previous meeting back in October of 2020 as the team secured a 42-0 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Key West since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
