The Jim Ned Indians will face off against the Sweetwater Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Jim Ned will be looking to extend their current six-game winning streak.
On Friday, Jim Ned beat Clyde 41-34. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Indians' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 195th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 493rd).
Jim Ned had a senior duo take command as Cash Gwinn threw for 157 yards and two touchdowns on only ten passes and Stone Griffon rushed for 63 yards and one score. Breck Lawson also deserves a mention for his punt return touchdown.
Jim Ned was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 209 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 178 rushing yards in six consecutive contests.
Special teams played a big role in the game for Jim Ned, adding 11 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Lawson, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Sweetwater, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Friday. They blew past Breckenridge, posting a 44-0 win. The Mustangs might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by 22 points or more this season.
Sweetwater's win came from a few key players Jim Ned will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Nick Avila, who rushed for 139 yards and one TD on only seven carries. Those 139 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Caiden Ortiz, who threw for 168 yards and three touchdowns on only 16 passes.
Sweetwater didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Cason Fields and Jose Quintero. Fields also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with nine. Sweetwater got some further help from Rohyn Price: he made 13 total tackles (2.0 for loss).
Jim Ned's victory bumped their record up to 8-1. As for Sweetwater, their win bumped their record up to 4-5.
Jim Ned strolled past Sweetwater in their previous meeting back in November of 2024 by a score of 45-28. Do the Indians have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
