Basketball Preview: Iona Prep Gaels vs. Cardinal Hayes Cardinals
Iona Prep is 2-8 against the Cardinals since February of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Iona Prep Gaels will head out on the road to take on the Cardinal Hayes Cardinals at 4:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
On Sunday, Iona Prep didn't have too much trouble with the Friars on the road as they won 63-45. Given Iona Prep's advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 19th, while the Friars are ranked 137th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Meanwhile, Cardinal Hayes came into Sunday's matchup having lost three straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They walked away with a 77-70 victory over DeWitt Clinton on Sunday. The victory was just what Cardinal Hayes needed coming off of a 90-62 defeat in their prior game.
The victory makes it two in a row for Iona Prep and bumps their season record up to 9-3. As for Cardinal Hayes, their victory bumped their record up to 9-10.
Iona Prep was able to grind out a solid victory over the Cardinals in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, winning 71-63. The rematch might be a little tougher for Iona Prep since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
